☄️ Hi guys, I hope you’re having a wonderful day. Today I bring you a post that always brings a bit of controversy, and that’s my list of my less favorite books this year!. First of all, I want to thank you for the support you’re put in my blog, I’m getting to know more and more wonderful people in the community and it makes me happy.
Second, in this post will be the books that I’ve enjoyed the least or that I haven’t liked at all, this doesn’t mean that I’m throwing hate to them, you know?, they just aren’t for me, so please don’t feel offended if your favorite book is here. In fact, if you enjoyed them, I’m really happy and I whish I’d have done it as well.
I’ll show you my Top 5 here, because, to be honest, I don’t have SO many books that I haven’t liked that much, luck for me, right? LOL
In general, I want to clarify, my 3 stars are usually average books for me, I don’t love them but they have some qualities that I’ve enjoyed, so isn’t, for my standards, a bad rating, that’s why there’s no 3 stars books here, I’ll put those who have less than that
So without more further ado, LET’S START!, it will be a difficult road lol ☄️
5 || Like Never and Always by Ann Aguirre
On a hot summer night, a screech of brakes and shattering glass changes two lives forever.
Liv wakes in the hospital, confused when they call her Morgan. She assumes it’s a case of mistaken identity, yet when the bandages come off, it’s not her face in the mirror anymore. It’s her best friend Morgan’s.
Morgan always seemed to have the perfect life, yet Liv must navigate endlessly disturbing secrets of the criminal and murderous variety—and a romance that feels like a betrayal. Torn between the boy she loved as Liv and the boy she’s grown to love as Morgan, Liv still has to survive Morgan’s last request.
☄️ I think the main idea was very original but it wasn’t executed correctly and it was more focus on the romantic side, that made everything very messy ☄️
4 || Tess of the Road (Tess of the Road #1) by Rachel Hartman
Meet Tess, a brave new heroine from beloved epic fantasy author Rachel Hartman.
In the medieval kingdom of Goredd, women are expected to be ladies, men are their protectors, and dragons get to be whomever they want. Tess, stubbornly, is a troublemaker. You can’t make a scene at your sister’s wedding and break a relative’s nose with one punch (no matter how pompous he is) and not suffer the consequences. As her family plans to send her to a nunnery, Tess yanks on her boots and sets out on a journey across the Southlands, alone and pretending to be a boy.
Where Tess is headed is a mystery, even to her. So when she runs into an old friend, it’s a stroke of luck. This friend is a quigutl—a subspecies of dragon—who gives her both a purpose and protection on the road. But Tess is guarding a troubling secret. Her tumultuous past is a heavy burden to carry, and the memories she’s tried to forget threaten to expose her to the world in more ways than one.
Returning to the fascinating world she created in the award-winning and New York Times bestselling Seraphina, Rachel Hartman introduces readers to a new character and a new quest, pushing the boundaries of genre once again in this wholly original fantasy.
☄️ I don’t think that this book has a solid plot, the main character took many silly decisions just so that the story could move forward. I think my mistake was to jump into this book without having read Seraphina, because although it can be done, I feel that I didn’t understand many references and that prevented my enjoyment. It’s also very long and many parts are only travel, not my kind of thing ☄️
3 || Dream On (Silber #2) by Kerstin Gier, Anthea Bell
Things seem to be going well for Liv Silver: she’s adjusting to her new home in London; she has a burgeoning romance with Henry Harper, one of the cutest boys in school; and the girl who’s been turning her dreams into nightmares, Anabel, is now locked up. But serenity doesn’t last for long.
It seems that Liv’s troubles are far from over—in fact, suddenly they’re piling up. School gossip blogger Secrecy knows all of Liv’s most intimate secrets, Henry might be hiding something from her, and at night Liv senses a dark presence following her through the corridors of the dream world. Does someone have a score to settle with Liv?
☄️ This sequel was a great disappointment for me, I adored the first book, but this one it was terrible. Dream On changed it main focus: dream world, to a gossip plot , and that was what most prevented myself from enjoying it, also the romance turned into something very toxic ☄️
2 || Red Rising (Red Rising Saga #1) by Pierce Brown
“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.”
“I live for you,” I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations.
Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.
But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity already reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.
Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies… even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.
☄️ Ok, I know I’m probably the only one who didn’t like this book, I really wanted to love it, but I couldn’t, at all
First, I can’t stand Darrow, he’s the typical impossibly perfect guy, OMG!!, too much for me. The connection with the characters is everything for me and here’s not that, I feel that there are things that happen with this character that are impossible and absolutely unreal, I hated him, sorry but just don’t connect.
The writing style is not for me, either, I found it heavy and boring most of the time. Please don’t kill me lol ☄️
1 || The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
NEMESIS (n)
1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome
2) A person’s undoing
3) Joshua Templeman
Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She prides herself on being loved by everyone at work – except for imposing, impeccably attired Joshua Templeman.
Trapped in a shared office, they’ve become entrenched in an addictive, never-ending game of one-upmanship. There’s the Staring Game, The Mirror Game, The HR Game. Lucy can’t let Joshua beat her at anything – especially when a huge promotion is on offer.
If Lucy wins, she’ll be Joshua’s boss. If she loses, she’ll resign. So why is she questioning herself? Maybe she doesn’t hate him. And just maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game . . .
☄️ First of all, I respect to all those who love this book, especially since I know they are the majority, this book has an incredible rating on Goodreads.
Leaving that aside, I HATED IT. In general I don’t put a rating when I DNFd a book, that’s why I didn’t do it this time, but even so I couldn’t not mention it because with security it’s the worst book I’ve come across this year. I’ve read the like 100 pages, so I’ll talk only about what I read.
The chemistry between the main characters was NONEXISTENT and it seems like such a PROBLEMATIC relationship. They seem to be adults but honestly they behave as 4 years children, the nonsense they say and do, is too much. Luci’s everything that’s wrong in the world, I can’t stand this girl, it’s so exaggerated and dramatic, I confess that I was scared of her at times, OMG lol.
Josh, it’s the typical Christian Gray and that’s all I need to say about him. The most immature characters I’ve read about
PS: if you love this book you probably shouldn’t read my review, I couldn’t contain myself there ☄️
I DNF Red Rising and Tess of the Road too. I’ve read Seraphina but believe me, the pacing in Tess is soooooo slow and yes, Tess took so many questionable decisions only for the plot to move forward. I don’t even think I get to the 50% mark because I was so frustrated

Oh on the one hand, I’m sorry you did n’ like it but, on the other hand, I’m happy not to be the only one lol 😊 . I really wanted to love both books but well, I guess they aren’t for me

My least favorite book of the year was a graphic novel titled Watersnakes. I hated the lesbian/bi representation, the story had massive plot holes, the characters were awfully underdeveloped, and there was not one good thing about the whole book except for the illustrations. I also really did not like The Right Thing To Do At The Time. It had unpenetrable writing and awful characters that were less interesting than watching paint dry.

Oh that’s so bad, it’s a shame when the representations aren’t made the right way and also when the characters are so poor, worst thing ever! 😫

My least favorite book that I read this year was The Queen of Tearling by Erika Johansen. I was disappointed with this book but I still gave it 3 stars.
Love your blog!

It’s so interesting to see that you didn’t enjoy Red Rising. I’ve only ever heard positive things about it so it’s always sounded way too over-hyped for me haha.

I think that my opinion is very unpopular, because I’ve seen everyone loving that book as well, but well, it was definitely not for me 🤷🏻♀️

It’s always such a shame when that happens with books 😫

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these books! I actually haven’t read any of the books you’ve mentioned — the only book I recognize is Red Rising, which I know has been really hyped but I’ve never really felt inclined to pick it up. 😅 I think it’s great that you only have 5 least favorite books this year, though — you must be great at picking out books you’ll like! Anyways, I hope your 2019 will be filled with amazing books 😊

Oh, you’re welcome! It’s a little scary to talk about the books you didn’t like because I know that many love them and I don’t want to hurt anyone, you know?, but at least they’re only 5 lol. Oh I don’t think I’m good choosing them, I just got lucky. I hope your 2019 is INCREDIBLE sweetheart 💕

I’m sorry you didn’t like The Hating Game! I actually loved that book! I haven’t read Red Rising yet but it’s on my TBR list.

Oh thanks honey. I think it’s one of those cases when the book is simply not for me at all, the same thing happened with Red Rising, but even so, I hope you really enjoy it once you read it 😊

I’ve heard similar things about tess of the road- it’s a real pity, but it doesn’t sound that good

I honestly hoped that I would really like it, especially for the promise of the dragon, but oh it was a very long and heavy journey, sadly I don’t think I would recommend it, just if you have already read Seraphina, maybe 😕

Thank you! Thought I was the only one who hated The Hating Game, I really really really did not like it
